San Marino is a tiny
republic surrounded by Italy. It is the oldest republic in the world. While Italy was
being
conquered by Piedmont-Sardina between 1860-70, San Marino remained independent. In 1862 the
new kingdom of
Italy signed a friendship treaty with San Marino.
