Medieval Portugal

Portugal was originally inhabited by aggressive Lusitanian tribes of Roman times. In 1143 Portugal was recognized as an independent kingdom. The Portuguese dynasty was strong & powerful maintaining independence into the 20th century. The Portuguese dynasty ruled for many centuries. The only time the dynasty failed to maintain control was between 1580 & 1640 when the Spanish Habsburgs ruled Portugal. [BM] {UA}
