Maori voyagers from Polynesia were the first to settle New Zealand in the 9th century. In 1642 the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman, arrived. The Maori remained unharmed until Capt. James Cook arrived in 1769, claiming New Zealand as British territory. In 1841 New Zealand became a British colony. [BM] {UA}
