From the 9th century to the
15th century the southern portion of Mauritania was controlled by the kingdoms of
Ghana,
Mali & Sanghay. In the 1050's the Muslim Almoravids from the Tidra Islands conquered Ghana,
Morocco, Spain &
Western Algeria. Their control was short lived.
