The islands belonging to Malaysia have been dealing in the spice industry since ancient times. Heavily influenced by India, the Malay states were Hindu. Many would convert to Islam when the Kingdom of Malacca rose to power in the 15th century. During the 16th & 17th centuries there was some influence from European nations; first the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch who seized Malacca in 1641.
