Medieval Lebanon
For many centuries Lebanon
was a part of Syria. Several key cities along the Mediterranean Sea were important centers
of the Phoenician empire. These same cities were important centers of early Christianity.
Away from the coast in the
fertile Bekka Valley orthodox Sunni Islam was the dominant
religion; while the mountainous regions were dominated
by the Druze sect of Islam.
