Loas is divided into two geographic regions: highlands & river valleys. The river valleys were inhabited by Thai-speaking Lao people, while the highlands were occupied primarily by Hmong. This division influenced the unity of Laos. Despite Vietnam & Thailand, the powerful neighbours to the east & west of Laos, France declared Laos as a French protectorate in 1893.
