Medieval Haiti
In 1492 Christopher Columbus
renamed the Haitian island of Arawak, Hispaniola. The next century saw the complete
annihilation of the Arawaks. These native inhabitants died in slavery, fell to disease and
were murdered. The
western half of the island was continually attacked by pirates and ceded
to France in 1697.
