Medieval Ghana
The territory now
known as Ghana has been trading gold as early as the 13th century.
In 1471 Portuguese
exploration discovered Ghana and named Africa's west coast the
Gold Coast. The Portuguese,
British, Danes and Dutch would exploit the
black people of the Gold Coast during the 16th
and 17th centuries by establishing
slave trading posts. This typical rural compound is found
in Tamale, Ghana.
