Medieval Gambia
Gambia was at one time the
western edge of the Kingdom of Mali. The Portuguese visited Gambia in 1455
& sold the
Gambia River to the British in 1588. With exclusive rights to the Gambia River, the British
merchants
established a trading post by 1660. For several hundred years France & England
fought for control of this
riverbed territory. In 1889 Gambia became a British Crown
Colony.
