In 1502 Columbus sailed past Costa Rica and pronounced that it was a "rich coast", or in Spanish "Costa Rica". Costa Rica was colonized in 1561 by Juan de Cavallon. With the colonizationof Costa Rica and the work of missionaries the Native Americans were killed in battle, fled or were wiped out by epidemics. [BM] {UA}
