Newspaper
A newspaper is a
publication, regularly
printed (usually on a lightweight paper called
newsprint) and
distributed (usually daily or weekly)
which contains news, opinions, advertisements, and
other items of general interest. These are usually
independent of government and, ideally,
free from
censorship. Until the invention of printing people
had to be satisfied with
information from official
sources, or had to rely on hearsay and rumour. The
first official
newspaper appeared in 59BC, as a
daily gazette called Acta Diurna (meaning "daily
events") was published and displayed in public
places in Rome.
