The modern magazine was made possible by the invention of the printing press in the 15th century. Yet it was not until literacy became widespread during the 19th century that magazines became popular.
In the 20th century the magazine industry exploded along with the development of the advertising industry. Many publishers resisted advertising. Then they found that with the steady income received from advertisers they were able to improve their quality while keeping the costs to their readers low.
