Japanese Castles
(1400-1600)
Castles were first constructed in the provinces during the period of
constant warfare in the
15th and 16th Centuries. They were plaster covered wooden buildings
on broad stone foundations, with
watchtowers of six and seven
stories. Castles in the 16th
Century had multiple moats and a maze. By the late
16th Century these castles became
administrative and economic centres around which cities
developed.
Soon these populated
areas gave rise to unique cities.
