The Gupta dynasty ruled according to Hindu principles. These principles included the idea that the ruler had divine authority but according to state documentation the monarch was in fact a "ruler made by Brahma, a servant of the people". Gupta Kings expanded their territories by constant warfare aided by alliances and diplomacy. The first Gupta ruler was Candragupta I (320-c. 335). [RB] {GC}
