Native Tribes of Western Canada
Wealth was very important in these
fishing tribes. The wealthier the family, the greater
their rank. Special rights were
granted to a person of great wealth. He may control special fishing
areas or own the best
fishing equipment. He may have rights to the best meat of a village kill or
the exclusive
use of a certain artistic design. The more land a person has the greater his power
within
the community. Wealth and position are inherited so that a person born a commoner will
remain a commoner for life.
