Feudalism

The price for the use of the land is loyalty and a few days of manual labour or military service each year. For those unfortunate enough to be born into the non-free tenure system, the rent of land was anything deemed appropriate by the lord. Non-free tenants called serfs were not at liberty to leave their lord's land. They were tied to the land, generation after generation, little more than slaves. [JG] {CI} {OH}
