Not all citizens of the People's Republic of China appreciated the communist regime. In 1989, 1000 students organized a pro-democracy rally in Tianamen Square, seen here in this photograph. Attempts to quell theuprising failed and in April the protesters clashed with the army. Over 3,000 civilians were killed along with 1,000 soldiers. The Chinese media reported only 300 dead, most of them soldiers. [JG] {CI} {RC}
