Man's increasing demand for basic needs, such as food and shelter, eventually resulted in a shortage or scarcity of these materials. Through collective effort and specialization these problems were solved but resulted in more complex social issues. Barter involves a straight exchange of goods for goods, but often the value of the goods were difficult to compare.
