The Vandals
(406-439AD)
In 406AD, Vandals from their Scandinavian homeland invaded Gaul
forcing a Roman
withdrawal from England. The Vandals were a fierce destructive tribe that
made their way
to Spain around 409AD. Because of the expanding Visigoths in Spain, Gaiseric
the King of
the Vandals in 429AD ferried his entire people across the Strait of Gibraltar so
they
could settle and plunder the rich Roman provinces of Northern Africa. By the year 439AD
the Vandals had captured Carthage and established their empire. Shown here is Roman ruins
in
Algeria that survived the Vandals invasion of North Africa.
