Viking Ships
(800AD)
Viking ships were among the finest technological developments of the Middle Ages. These
ships are known from discoveries of a number of unearthed ships, like the Obseberg
longboat,
built around the year 800AD. Viking ships were revered possessions and they
were adorned
with only the finest art and carvings. The boats themselves could carry a
hundred men yet be
sailed by as few as fifteen. The ships were strong enough to
survive at sea but small enough
to out-manoeuvre shore defence and traverse inland
rivers.
