Ancient Tunisia
Tunisia was
occupied in 1000BC by the Pheonicians, an ancient seafaring people. An important
settlement
established by the Pheonicians was Carthage. Carthage was conquered by the Romans
in 146BC. The Roman Empire
ruled Tunisia until the Vandals conquered it in the 5th century
AD. In the 6th century Tunisia was reconquered
by the Byzantine Empire. With the expansion
of Islam in the 7th century Tunisian became part of the Arab world.
Tunisia remains a
predominantly Muslim country.
