Ancient Iraq
The Mesopotamian
region, where Iraq is located, is the territory of one of the world's oldest civilizations.
This rich
and fertile valley was first founded as the city-state of Sumer before 3000 BC.
The Mesopotamian region has been
ruled by the Babylonian empire, the Assyrian empire and
finally the Persian dynasties for some 1000 years. In this
photograph is the ancient Palace
of Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon, with an inset of the Babylonian gates.
