Jupiter
Jupiter is the largest planet in the
solar system, at 1400 times the volume of the Earth. But it is only 318 times as massive as
Earth, indicating it must be made of something quite light. Jupiter is a gas giant, its
massive atmosphere consisting almost entirely of hydrogen (80%) and helium (20%). Giant
storms take place in this heavy atmosphere. The Great Red Spot that you can see in our image
is a gigantic storm. Scientists do not know why the spot is red or why there is only one.
