Initially a household activity, the weaving of Harris Tweed has evolved
into a strong, international business organized as a home based cottage
industry.
The Harris Tweed Act of Parliament, states that all woven, woolen cloth to
bear the name Harris Tweed must meet the following criteria:
1. The cloth must be hand woven by the weaver in the Outer Hebrides of
Scotland.
2. The weaving yarns must be 100% pure new wool, spun, dyed and finished on
the islands.
The weavers work from their own homes, submitting their finished works to the Harris Tweed Authority to be judged and stamped as authentic Harris Tweed.
