The early North American pioneers brought with them weaving skills from
their homelands. These settlers had to produce their own cloth, as
commercial textiles were not readily available.
Family members wove cloth for clothing and household goods from locally available wool and linen. Many of these traditional weaving patterns have survived and are known as Classical Colonial Weaves. This picture shows woven bed coverings typical of the 17th century. MORE!
