Charcoal has a soft, grainy quality, smudges easily and is mainly used for sketching.
It comes in sticks like chalk and in pencil form.
These charcoal sketches are by Anthony van Dyck.
Van Dyck was the student of famous Flemish Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens.
