Wood
Wood can be used in both subtractive carving and additive constructions. It can be carved
and nailed, filed and drilled, sanded and glued. Wood has a natural warm feeling with
attractive colour and grain.

Both hardwoods and softwoods are used for sculpture. Some are
close-grained, and they cut like cheese; others are open-grained and stringy.
Wood has a fibrous structure that allows it to be carved thinly while maintaining some
freedom. Wood is used mainly for indoor sculpture because it is not that tough or durable as
changes of humidity and temperature may cause it to split.
The grain of wood is one of its most attractive features. It gives off a variety of
pattern and texture to its surfaces. Its colours, too, are subtle and varied.
