Marble is an excellent sculptural material because it can be polished to look like glass or left textured and rough. [MH] {NR}
Marble is a metamorphic rock, which is usually made from recrystallized limestone. Colour and appearance are marbles most important qualities. Another asset of marble is that it is resistant to abrasion. As well it has the ability to transmit light.
The best-known marble is Italian Carrara marble. It was used by Roman and Renaissance sculptors, especially Michelangelo and is still used today. Greek sculptors preferred marble to any other stone. The most famous piece of Greek sculpting, made from marble, is the Parthenon. [RA] {EB}
