Greek Sculpture
Greek Sculpture can be organized into two categories: Statues, which stand freely, and
Reliefs, which adorn the walls of buildings.

Greek sculptures on a large scale must have begun to develop long before the mid-seventh
century. Before that sculpting was done mainly with wood. The desire to build and sculpt in
stone for the sake of permanence was what caused the large-scale development of Greek
sculpting. Greeks sculpted the first truly freestanding large stone images of the human form
around 600 B.C. The male statues were called Kouros and the female were called Kore. The
male statues would always appear naked whereas the women would be clothed.
It was the Greeks who first made high reliefs common in sculpture. They did this by
fully exploring the artistic potentials of the genre.
