The Hellenistic Period (after 325BC)
SCULPTURES FROM THE CLASSICAL PERIOD The Hellenisitic Period follows the expansion of the Greek world, showing a wider range of themes, including female nudes. Here, Venus de Milo (200BC) looks on as Laocoon and sons are set upon by serpents sent by Apollo (1st Century AD). Laocoon was a priest of Apollo who warned the Trojans of the Trojan Horse left by the Greeks during the siege of Troy. The poses are exaggerated and theatrical. [NS] {RH}
