This High Relief in marble shows "Horsemen in the Panatheaic Procession", a frieze from the Parthenon, now found in the British Museum, one of the notorious Elgin Marbles. Between 1801 - 1803AD, British Lord Elgin removed many of these sculptures from the Parthenon, where they had lain in ruins after the explosion in 1687 of Turkish gunpowder stored in the Parthenon. Athens now wants these marbles returned, hence the controversy. [NS] {HJ}
