In the mid-eighteenth century homes had a narrow range of household furnishings. Architects
would most commonly make large pieces of furniture. In 1812 the French produced a book on
interior decoration, which set the standard for their Empire's style. Their furniture was
quite elaborate and not used on a regular basis.
Today using modern production methods and finishing techniques contemporary craft
persons are working with metal, glass, plastics, leather, fibres, and wood to create
furniture for offices, homes and public spaces.
