Ghiberti used higher and lower reliefs for an added sense of depth. In the panel The Story of Jacob and Esau Ghiberti varied the degree of relief, the figures in the foreground were modelled almost in the round. The further the distance of the figures and architecture the smaller and the shallower the relief. [MH] {NR}
