Colour field painting relied only on colour! They made no use of emotion or mathematical calculations or geometry just pure colour presented in simplistic shapes such as squares or rectangles. Some artists such as Barnett Newman (1905-1970) wanted the viewer to think inwardly as they look at the art such a the Oriental priest does when he looks at a blank wall to meditate. It has also been called Post Painterly Abstraction, Classical Abstraction, and Hard Edge Painting. [MH] {GB}
