Watercolour
Artists first used this medium as a sketching technique before making oil paintings in their studios.
It has been used since ancient Egypt yet it was not considered a major painting medium until Winslow Homer, an American artist, became famous for his paintings done in watercolours.
Most of the colours are transparent and the white areas on the picture are often the white of the paper which is left showing through.
