Manet's work offended contemporary morality as he combined elements for aesthetic effect
alone, such as nudes in the woods, or a nude in frontal pose.
There were no expressive or symbolic content in models, just pictorial structure itself.
He admired Hals, Velasquez, and Goya for their broad open technique and use of light and colour values.
His pictures consisted of flat patches of colour with little detail.
