Pop since the 60s
The 60's brought a time of political change, that was reflected in the music of the time.
People found, the music quality improved substantially if performed in a live setting.
You could charge more admission than a movie, you had live personalities on the stage, and the sound was better in the concert situation.
Festivals such as the Monterey Pop and the Newport Jazz and Folk festival collected large numbers of Pop groups, and the festival could last for days.
Woodstock was the festival height, and in recent years has been revived somewhat with a Woodstock reunion and the formation of Lollapalooza.
If a song enters the charts and proceeds to the top 40, then we consider it to be popular music, but
today the term applies to the style that is less abrasive than rock, and faster than classical.
