Gregorian Chant
The first are the masses written in Gregorian Chant.
These exquisite monophonic works were most significant in their time of creation, from the founding of Christianity to about 1000(ad).
Pope Gregory in 590 collected the songs and for the first time inscribed them on manuscript, and became known as plainsong at this time.
It is estimated that 1100 pieces belong to this collection.
Striking beauty, unstoppable rhythmic flow, this music strongly influenced both church and secular music to come.
