Perhaps overlooked, the human voice is the instrument from which all musical theory and history was born. Since we learned to talk, singing couldn't have been far behind. As great as a single voice can sound, the difficulty in forming a choir was that peoples voices were as individual as the people themselves. A system of ordering was required to group people into sections. Besides, it is helpful to sing beside someone who sings like you do. [AW] {JO}
