Perhaps the oldest of instruments, original drums were fashioned by stretching the hide of an animal over a bored piece of wood(usually in a circular shape). With a circular shell, a drum has two surfaces (heads) which are stretched over the open ends. These plastic heads vibrate when struck, and the interior allows for the sound to be projected and the sound waves are compressed on themselves. [AW] {NR}
