The Renaissance
THE MUSICIAN MONSIEUR DE LA BRETECHE The earth was no longer flat, the earth moved on an axis around the sun, not the other way around. Music of the time was most reflective of the general views of those who lived it. As the renaissance flowed, so did the vocal craft. Troubadours and wandering minstrels had passed from the scene, but their familiar tunes were preserved in memory. At an age where instrumental music had not yet reached perfection, soloists and small choirs, usually composed of men, practiced the fine art of minstrelsy with the vigour men displayed towards sword-fighting. This painting by J. Honore Fragonard is entitled "The Musician Monsieur de la Breteche". [AW] {NR}
