Influences on the Development of Song

Polyphonic sound flourished especially in Italy, that is, music with more than one melody line. This transpired in 1500-1600. In the growth of western music, three forces exerted a significant influence on the development of song:(1.) the establishment of music within the Christian church that came from the Hebrew Synagogue;(2) adherence to a feudal system of government that gave both master and servant some degree of security and an opportunity to learn music, and (3) the formulation of opera (c.1600).
