Influences on the Development of Song
Polyphonic sound flourished especially in Italy, that is, music with more than one melody line.
This transpired in 1500-1600.
In the growth of western music, three forces exerted a significant influence on the development of
song:(1.) the establishment of music within the Christian church that came from the Hebrew Synagogue;(2)
adherence to a feudal system of government that gave both master and servant some degree of security and an
opportunity to learn music, and (3) the formulation of opera (c.1600). This photograph features the
Old Paris Opera House, France.
