MEN AT THE WAILING WALL The objects of worship have been varied, ranging from stone idols to Jesus Christ. Apparently, some kind of music was used in all of these instances, but the Old Hebrew synagogical practices constitute the first musical procedures about which we know anything today. There during an era that pre-dates the emergence of Christianity by one thousand years, prayer texts were chanted aloud during worship. The service leader would use a series of hand signals to indicate where the variations in pitch would appear in the chant. These Jewish men are praying at the wailing wall in Jerusalem. [AW] {MI}
