Keys

The principle of Key is this: The tunes which are written in keys are all of them "controlled" by a note, which is felt to be the chief note and which we call the key-note or tonic. The other notes also have fairly definite characters which make them easy to recognize. Most songs begin on the tonic of the scale and still more songs end on it, and if a tune has harmonies in it we almost always find the tonic as the lowest note in the bass section. [AW] {JO}
