Acoustics 2
LOOKING IN A TUBA Second, what we call the pitch of the sound depends on how many vibrations there are in a second. This is called the Frequency. When the vibrations follow one another very quickly, the pitch is said to be high, and the opposite is true for low sounds. Generally speaking, the larger the instrument the lower the pitch. A tuba has much more space for the sound to vibrate, so the frequency is slower and the pitch is low. The speed of sound is less than that of light, but still very rapid, at about 12 miles per minute. Watch a man hammering who is a little distance away from you. You see his hammer fall, but the sound of the strike comes slightly delayed. [AW] {JO}
