Robert Alexander Schumann was born at Zwickau, Saxony in 1810 and is in most opinion the predominant composer of the Romantic period. At 17 he was writing poems and setting them to music (for he had begun to compose at the age of 7). His first music teacher was an organist who soon reported that his pupil was so advanced that he could teach him no more. At the age of 19, Schumann entered the University of Heidelberg to study law, but soon was neglecting his studies practising the piano seven hours per day. [AW] {JO}
