INDEX NEXT UP LAST ATG Works of Tchaikovsky Works of Tchaikovsky

VIOLIN Tchaikovsky was a very shy and nervous man so much so that he never conducted an orchestra until he was 50 years old! His works include 6 symphonies and 5 Symphonic poems; 6 suites including the well-known Nutcracker Suite; 3 piano concertos and a violin concerto; a number of operas and ballets; chamber music, piano music and choral works. His style is very emotional and exciting as befits the Russian people and this passion is well evident in his music. His orchestration is vivid and very effective. His death occurred in this way. He was feeling ill and very thirsty and, although warned, he drank a glass of unboiled water (a dangerous thing to do in St. Petersburg) and in a few days he was dead. [AW] {JO}
