Tchaikovsky
TCHAIKOVSKY Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, Russia in 1840 and he passed away in Leningrad in 1893. His father would play Mozart to his son by means of a Orchestrion when Tchaikovsky was quite young, this leading to the study of piano at age 7, and composition at 10. At 19 years of age, he began study at the Conservatory and later became a professor of composition there. Tchaikovsky's own compositions were becoming known to the public, and when he was 26 a rich widow, who admired his work wrote to him and offered to pay a regular salary so he could devote his full time to his art. Later the Tsar of Russia would grant him a pension to make him financially stable. [AW] {JO}
