Perhaps the greatest French composer of the Romantic era, Louis Hector Berlioz was born in 1803 near Grenoble.
He studied at the Paris Conservatory, and after he finished in only his 5th year of composing he won the Priz de Rome, one of the most prestigious awards of the day.
He wrote orchestral music mostly, for he loved large groups of musicians, to do things on a grand scale.
He also published many books on writing music.
He died in 1869.
